OTTAWA, ON – June 19, 2023 – The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Michele L. Ramien as CDA President, effective June 16, 2023. Dr. Ramien aims to advocate for, protect, and support the interests of Certified Dermatologists and the specialty of dermatology during her appointment as President. “We have the opportunity to increase engagement amongst our members by re-imagining and modernizing our community. United by our shared profession and with all our diverse expertise, experiences, and strengths, we are ready to continue the important work that’s been done over the last few years in advocacy, public education, and equity, diversity, and inclusion to elevate Canadian dermatology,” said Dr. Ramien. “Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that Canadians with skin conditions receive the best care from the most expert providers.” Dr. Ramien certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Dermatology in 2013, adding an American Board of Dermatology Pediatric Dermatology certification in 2018. She is currently a Clinician-Investigator at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alta., with research interests in severe cutaneous adverse reactions in children and eczema education and management. Her practice is focused on the clinical care of medically or dermatologically complex children. She continues to practice general dermatology at her adult clinic at the University of Calgary, Dermatology Division and at the Stoney Health Centre, serving the Chiniki, Goodstoney, and Bearspaw First Nations. She is passionate about teaching and coaching the next generation with a ‘failing forward’ approach. Dr. Ramien earned her medical degree from McGill University in 2008, completed residency training at the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa, and then pursued a Pediatric Dermatology fellowship at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal, Que. She returned to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa as a staff dermatologist in 2014 but moved to Calgary for a full-time academic position in 2018. Dr. Ramien brings a national perspective from working across Canada, strategic leadership, clinical expertise, and a growth-oriented mindset to the CDA. The CDA welcomes Dr. Ramien as President of the Canadian Dermatology Association for a one-year term.
