Stephanie’s Journey

Detecting Basal Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma Early

During the height of the pandemic, Stephanie began noticing a troubling mole but faced significant challenges getting a referral and an appointment to see a dermatologist. Recognizing the need for action, she persisted despite long wait times and delays. After nearly a year of advocating for herself, Stephanie finally found the right specialist and was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma and stage II melanoma.

Once Stephanie connected with a compassionate dermatologist, her experience was transformative. After quickly assessing a photo of her mole, the dermatologist took immediate action, addressing not only the melanoma but also her ongoing fatigue and worry. Through regular full-body checks, psychological support, and education for her and her family, he ensured they stayed on top of any potential skin issues.

Stephanie’s experience underscores the vital role dermatologists play in providing life-saving interventions, screening, and continuity of care. Four years later, with her cancer in remission, she now encourages others to advocate for themselves, prioritize prevention, and recognize and celebrate the role of dermatologists in healthcare.
