Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Tom grew up alongside the North Atlantic Ocean playground full of majestic icebergs, playful whales, and smart-looking puffins. He received his Honours Bachelor of Commerce (B. Comm. Hons.) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees from Memorial University.

As a seasoned financial and human resources executive, Tom brings a wealth of corporate experience and a proven track record in senior management roles. Tom’s extensive leadership, both in executive capacities and as a board director, equips him with the expertise to contribute effectively to long-term strategies and address the complex challenges facing today’s business leaders.

Over the past fifteen years, Tom has thrived as (2IC) Vice President and CFO of the Council of Canadian Academies, demonstrating adaptability and strategic acumen by effectively collaborating with five different CEOs.

Tom has extensive board experience spanning various leadership roles. He has served as an independent director on the board and held pivotal positions on several board committees, including the Finance and Audit Committee, Human Resources and Compensation Committee, Governance and Nominating Committee, and Special Committees such as CEO Search and Government Relations.

Tom’s board engagements have encompassed diverse organizational structures, including national and

provincial associations, federal and provincial crowns, for-profit (private), and not-for-profit entities (regulated and non-regulated). This breadth of exposure has enriched his diversity of thought and perspective and honed his ability to navigate complexities across different sectors.

In addition to board roles, Tom holds esteemed professorial designations, including the ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors and C. Dir (Chartered Director) from the Directors College. Tom’s recognition as a Fellow CPA (FCPA) signifies exceptional leadership, competency, and stewardship.
